About Fjällhästen

In 1986 Osvald Jonsson exchanged his motor-bike in attendance of reindeer for an Icelandichorse. His body had been badly treated of the tough driving in the mountains. Now it was time to test a new and for the body more kind way of finding the way in the mountains. The Icelandichorse Grani was the first to arrive in Ammarnäs to assist Osvald with the reindeer. But to keep in the step with the motor-bikes was hard. On the other hand the interest had been woken among visitors in Ammarnäs to come along with Osvald and Grani on mountaintours.
The idea to the company Fjällhästen was born; to let guests take part of the mountains and the Lappish culture with help from Icelandic horses.
In 1987 the first tours leave for Vindelfjällen´s Naturereserve and the family Jonsson´s old "Lapptaxland".

Today the company consists of about 20 Icelandic horses and two guides; Osvald Jonsson and Malin Johansson.
Fjällhästen offers both shorter tourriding around Ammarnäs and week long expeditions through Lappland´s magnificent mountain world. The long tours include lodging in cots, food with a big part consisting of local raw materials and opportunities of fishing char in some mountainlake.
Several of these arrangements build on confidence and agreement with Gran´s "Lappvillage". Fjällhästen is also an enterprising driving force in Ammarnäs Communitycompany where we work idealisticly to improve the business conditions of the village.
As the threatened arctic fox has one of its most important strains within Vindelfjällen´s Naturereserve it is a matter of course for as at Fjällhästen to support and assist the project Arctic fox e.g. with guarding, inventory and driving out feed. We also inform our guests on the situation of the arctic fox and they who want can support the project by paying money into a postal giro account.
